3 Types of Discipline

To attain the blissful state of the Self, a seeker needs to have discipline, if not it will be very difficult to become aware of his true nature and do the practices on a daily basics. At the beginning it may appear to be difficult, but with determination it will become easier and more pleasant to follow the rules of discipline added to improve the quality of life. I would prefer to give an example as cleaning our teethes. We do it daily because we are aware of the importance of this practice, even if as children's we did not enjoy doing it. Now it had become a daily routine.
There are 3 important disciplines that a devotee or seeker needs to follow.

First is the discipline of the body.
To maintain the body healthy we need to take care of it. If we give it bad food we will create more suffering in our life then we already have. A seeker is more sensitive then a "normal" person and he is more aware of the mind then a ignorant person. By giving good alimentation to the body the mind becomes more calm and peaceful. If we eat chocolate the first minutes we wake up, our mind will become hyperactive the entire day, and for sure this is not a good intention for a person involved in meditation practice. Also we need to keep the body clean and in good shape. To obtain purity of the mind we should start by obtaining purity of the body, also to calm the mind we need to do some physical activity. If we are lazy our mind are hyperactive, and to overcome this hyperactivity we should start by overcoming our laziness and start doing some physical activity. This is another purpose of Asanas (yoga postures). Also in order to maintain the body in good conditions we need to respect the natural biorhythm of sleep. If the sleep is to much we become dull, if the sleep is to little we become to nervous. So a good quantity of sleep will solve this obstacles.

The second type of discipline is discipline of speech.
Words have such a immense power and we are not aware of it. Every word we are expelling  from our mouths have such an impact on others mind and life. All the conflicts in the world are starting because of words. All the relationship between lovers finish because of words. We are using so much this power without the purpose to create peace and love in others heart. Usually we speak so that people know we are present in the group. Speech use so much prana (life force) from our organism. If we have a full day of speaking we feel so tired and we can't understand why. Didan"t it happen to you?
Discipline of speech means not to use useless words in useless situations. Keep your words, don't waste them for nothing. An enlightened person is speaking only if the question is put at the right time, at the right place and in the right manner. As Guruji use to say, "Purpose of words is to create silence", how many times did your words created silence in the mind of others? Speak only if the words are creating silence and bring love and peace in the minds of others. This is discipline of speech.

The third type of discipline is the discipline of the mind.
I would say that discipline of the mind means dispassion. We get affected by others words, actions and decision. We get affected by situations and events. We get affected of all the objects of the senses. Our mind is anchoring  on all what we see, hear, smell, taste or feel. The more our mind gets dispassionate the more we attain to Yoga or Union.
Don't allow your mind to anchor to anything in the real of Samsara. Everything is an illusion created by the mind. If we know this truth how could we still get affected of all this factors? Just look at the years that pass in your life, doesn't everything looks like a movie? We are born and soon we will die, this will happen in no time. How much time we think we are here on this earth? 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 years? So what? They will pass in no time. Becoming aware of this truth, how could we still get affected of all the emotions that are arising and dissolving in our mind? Discipline of the mind means to stop our desires, our negative emotions, our attachment to words and events, actions and situations. They will all finish. Everything is rising and dissolving in no time. Make your mind hollow and empty. The mind of a Yogi is hollow and empty, he does not fight against emotions or situations but he accepts everything and with great dispassion he does not get affected. Emotions are rising and dissolving in such a hollow and empty mind. This is a path to mastery.

By following the disciplines day by day we get more in contact with our inner strength. The dust from our eyes is disappearing and we are able to see more and more the reality. The world is created by our own perception, so is a good decision to see it in a beautiful and bright way. As Lord Buddha said, "Be your own light" in the same way i would say, "become aware of your inner beauty, surrender and open your eyes"

  1. very useful this post. everybody should be aware of their body, mind, speech. is not so easy to put this in practice, but if you attain this discipline, even 20%, then you' ll be very pleased of the results. all your life could change only by changing a little bad habit towards body, mind or speech.
so thank you cosmin for sharing your knowledge! >:D<

  2. Lately I've heard quite a few stories about people whose lives where turned around and in some cases even saved by Yoga. I find these stories to be very inspiring.
You have made the right choice my friend :) I've noticed something about you in the (sadly) short time that we've spent together, you always were a very spiritual guy, with tons of "emotional intelligence" I think that is a rare gift and probably your biggest straight.. and because of that, you strike me as the kind of guy that can take more than most people can and get out of situations where the great majority would just kneel... Sadly this is not enough to keep a otherwise good young man on the right path in life :| I think there was a lot of anger, a lot of frustration in you - and the music u use to listen kind of gave that away... I think you tried to make the most out of the hand that you were dealt in life but you were dealt a pretty s...y hand. Also can't blame everything on others you probably made some dumb mistakes also... god knows you were no saint :))
I think this life changing experience is the break that you needed... and although you know my stand on spiritual and religious stuff(not the same thing I know...) and I probably made fun about your "ying&yang" in the past :P I have to admit it was a WISE choice my friend now that I see that you have your emotions and your life under control... People sometimes struggle their entire life with that and in lots of cases fail miserably and end up taking refuge in the worst possible tings: alcohol, drugs and stuff like that... and make the lives of those around them a living hell also...
I'm sure you know that you owe this world to help at least one person out there in the same way that you were helped. ;)
Safe journey, have fun, enjoy life bla-bla-bla
and keep posting your stories and experiences :D
    take care! >:D<
